India Meteorological Department

India Meteorological Department (IMD) was established in 1875. It is the national nodal agency for the meteorological observations and forecast in India. The agency primarily carries out the following operations:

• Take meteorological observations and provide relevant information for the weather-sensitive activities such as agriculture, irrigation, shipping, aviation and offshore oil explorations in the country.
• Issue forecast and warning for severe weather phenomenon such as tropical cyclone, norwester, dust storm, heavy rain, snow, cold and heat waves.
• Provide meteorological information required for agriculture, water resource management, industries, oil exploration and other nation- building activities.
• Conduct and promote research in meteorology and allied disciplines.
